The mere mention of a used car salesmen causes many people to cringe (including us). But we’re all not bad!
Unfortunately, a few bad apples have spoiled the whole bunch. As a result, used car salesmen are known for using sleazy lines on their customers to muscle a sale.
Check out a couple of the most common used car salesman lines below. Maybe you’ve even been on the receiving end of one of them?
“I don’t know if I can do __, but if I could, would you buy the car today?”
This line is used as a way to convince you that the salesperson is on your side and will fight for whatever you’re trying to get in this sale. He or she say they’ll beg and plead with the sales manager to give you what you need, but only if you make a commitment to purchasing.
The salesperson may even try to get you to sign something saying “If (fill in the blank), then I commit to purchasing.”
Negotiations don’t generally involve signatures. And if they do, it’s not binding.
Of course, this is all a hoax to convince you that you’re getting a good deal and buy.
“We knew it had that problem. That’s why it’s priced so low.”
You’re getting ready to test-drive a car, pull up on the handle and it comes off in your hand.
Or you try to crank up the engine and a cloud of smoke rises from the hood.
The next thing out of the salesperson’s mouth is: “Yeah, we knew it had that problem. That’s why we priced it so low.”
This is your cue to negotiate a better deal if you’re still interested in the vehicle. Just mention the extra money you’d have to spend to get the problem fixed. But even before committing, take it upon yourself to get a thorough inspection.
