Jeep-lovers get pumped: Fiat Chrysler is planning to add a new Jeep pickup truck to its lineup in the coming years. A recent Nasdaq article reports that the new truck is likely to begin production in 2017 or 2018. This pickup is said to be not unlike the Jeep Gladiator that was released in 2005.
Many believe this idea will solve a few problems for CEO Sergio Machionne. One major problem is that Chrysler’s oldest, most historic factory in Toledo, Ohio is maxed out as far as space and ability to produce any extra vehicles. Jeep has other American factories in Detroit and Belvidere, Illinois, where the popular Jeep Patriot is manufactured. The Toledo facility is a major profit center, but would have to be expanded or relocated elsewhere in order to increase production of any other vehicle.
CEO Machionne’s suggestion to move Wrangler’s production line out of the Toledo factory and into another factory in the U.S. or Canada was shot down quickly by Ohio politicians and Jeep loyalists. Because of the upheaval, a new idea is being considered.
Each month, approximately 18,000 Jeep Cherokees are sold nationwide, while the Wrangler-based pickup is expected to sell 10,000 or more a month. The consideration is to move the production of Cherokees to a new location and manufacture the new pickup in Toledo. The benefit of this idea is that dealers would have more Jeeps to sell. More Cherokees can get manufactured in a different location and the Toledo factory will be extra busy making more Jeeps.
Another problem that may be solved is how Marchionne can make the most of the recent booming sales of pickups and SUV’s by entering into a thriving market. For a while, pickup trucks were declining in sales due to high gas prices, but lately they have had a major rebirth.
How do you feel about a new Jeep pickup truck? Would this be a lifestyle vehicle choice for you?
