Buying v. Converting: The Best Way to Obtain an RHD Jeep Wrangler

picture of right hand drive vehicle

Jeep manufactures a small amount of right-hand drive (RHD) Jeeps for rural postal workers around the country and the rare car enthusiast. Postal workers on rural routes have to use their own vehicles for delivering mail, so they either have the option of converting their left-hand drive (LHD) vehicle or buying a factory-made RHD vehicle.

As long as you follow NHTSA guidelines, converting a vehicle to right-hand drive is legal in the U.S. It’s even possible to buy a fairly cheap conversion kit that allows you to move the steering wheel and pedals to the right side of the car.

Downsides of Conversion Kits

While the price tag on this option may seem nice, there are some downsides. For one, it isn’t aesthetically pleasing. If you take pride in what your car looks like, having a big system of pulleys and levers that runs from one side of the car to the other probably isn’t for you.

You can also perform a more “acceptable” conversion and take everything apart, but this poses some problems as well:

1) You have to take all of the guts out of your car and then put it back together; and

2) If something is reassembled incorrectly, the vehicle can be incredibly dangerous to drive.

The other option for converting an LHD vehicle to RHD is paying a professional to do it. This option is preferable in terms of safety, but can cost upwards of $30,000. If your car is only worth $5,000, you’ll probably want to throw this option right out the window.

Advantages of Buying a Factory RHD Vehicle

With all this in mind, a factory-made RHD vehicle is looking pretty attractive, isn’t it? The truth is, it should. Buying a vehicle designed to be right-hand drive is safer, more attractive and reliable.

For example, Jeep recently did a voluntary recall on RHD Jeep Wranglers for a possible airbag issue. Chrysler was proactive about fixing the problem, and owners didn’t have to pay for the repairs. They were ultimately looking out for the safety of their drivers.
