We hear about them more and more these days. We’re talking about self-driven cars. But how close are we really to cars chauffeuring us around? While industry analysts say that truly self-driving cars are decades away, the technology that will eventually build into automated vehicles are already real and on the roads.
One vehicle that showcases some of the most cutting edge automated features is the Jeep Cherokee, both the 2014 and 2015 Trailhawk and Limited models. Although the Cherokee still needs a driver (for now), here are a few of its most impressive automated features to help drivers stay safe:
- Park Assist: The Cherokee’s Park Assist capability uses sonar detection to help you safely and easily parallel park in a perpendicular space.
- Lane Departure Warning: Sometimes you might get sleepy behind the wheel, or maybe you can’t quite see where the lane lines are because of road conditions or poor line markings. The Cherokee offers a lane departure warning to alert the driver when they are drifting between lanes and can even pull the steering wheel back to the center of the lane if necessary.
- Forward Collision Warning: The Cherokee uses sensors to detect your speed of travel compared to obstacles that are in front of you. It will alert you with a visual and audible warning if you’re approaching a stopped obstacle at too high a speed. In certain situations, it can even begin automatically braking and tightening the seat belts to mitigate a potential crash.
- Blind Spot Monitoring and Cross Path Detection: The Cherokee has sensors to see objects that are in your blind spot. It can also warn you when there are obstacles that you may not see when you’re driving in reverse.
While you may not be able to take a nap while your car drives you to vacation quite yet, the automated features found in vehicles like the Jeep Cherokee are welcome safety additions for drivers everywhere.
