Dodge Chargers are known for their toughness and speed, so they generally attract drivers looking for a sleek “muscle car” – something that can take on just about anything and has a big engine, but emulates “cool” at the same time.
In Hollywood, Chargers have been used for some important jobs both on and off the big screen. More recently, a Dodge Charger was used in the popular show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and it has been the car of choice for law enforcement since 2006.
One of the most notable Dodge Chargers, though, dates back to 1969 to a popular TV show you may have heard of: The Dukes of Hazzard.
Interesting Facts You May Not Know About The Duke’s Dodge Charger
The Duke boys pushed the limits of what the Dodge Charger could do with stunts and jumps on almost every episode (well, to be fair, their stunt doubles did). It’s estimated that the show went through somewhere between 250 and 325 cars in 147 episodes.
When they first started attempting jumps (like the infamous one in the opening credits), their car – nicknamed “General Lee” – was too heavy in the front and would nose over, so they started adding sandbags in the back for weight.
Most of the Dodge Chargers used in the show were completely destroyed doing various stunts, but about 17 of them are said to still be around (not necessarily running).
Today’s Dodge Charger is loaded with a 707-HP Supercharged 6.2L HEMI® SRT Hellcat V8 Engine and five-link rear suspension to make those legendary jumps with ease (but we don’t recommended trying them at home).
