Fall is here which means Old Man Winter is right around the corner! Every season of the year, it is important to make certain your vehicle is running properly. However, winter can be especially brutal on your vehicle and there are certain items that you need to check off the list to make sure you are winter ready.
One of these items is checking the antifreeze, which is an important component to the health and longevity of your car, truck or SUV.
What is antifreeze?
Antifreeze is a mixture of glycol and water. The glycol helps prevent your coolant from turning to ice in extremely harsh, cold winter conditions. The suggested mixture is usually half water and half glycol. This particular mixture has a lower freezing point and will allow the heat from your engine to transfer inside the vehicle.
It’s important to have the proper portions of ingredients in your antifreeze for various reasons. If you use 100 percent water then you will cause your engine to overheat. If you use one hundred percent coolant (glycol), you will put your engine in danger of no longer working properly.
What does antifreeze do?
Besides keeping your engine at an optimal temperature, antifreeze has other important functions as well. For one, it helps prevent rust and corrosion from building up into your cooling system. Also, if the antifreeze is not changed when it should be, dirt particles can begin to build up and cause problems in your system. Check your vehicle manual for recommended times to change the antifreeze.
