Imagine you are headed to work on a hot summer morning when you suddenly realize your car’s air conditioner is blowing out hot air, or perhaps not blowing air at all! An even worse scenario is if the kids are buckled up in the backseat on a summer road trip when the car A/C stops working. Cue the complaining!
Fortunately, these worst-case scenarios can be avoided by simply being proactive and getting your car professionally serviced before you end up stuck on the side of the road in the summer heat.
Below are several signs that indicate there may be a problem with your vehicle’s A/C system:
- You find moisture buildup in the car
- There is ice buildup on the compressor
- You hear a grinding or grating sound when you turn on the A/C
- The A/C has very low power
- There is no cool air coming out
These types of problems can occur for a variety of reasons, but some the most common culprits are dusty condensers, low refrigerant and leaks.
The condenser is a very important part of your car’s cooling system. If it is covered in debris or moisture of any kind, cool air will be blocked from coming out of the vents. This is why it is vital to have your air conditioner maintained and cleaned.
There can also be an insufficient amount of refrigerant. During the winter months, when you use the heat instead of the A/C, the cooling system can dry out. Thus, verifying that the proper amount of refrigerant is in the system is important. Refrigerant can be toxic though (especially in older cars), so we strongly advise you take it to a professional check the levels.
By far, leaks are the most common problem for air conditioning issues. You’ll need a repairman to identify where the leak is coming from and patch it.
These are just a few possible reasons why your car’s A/C system may not be working properly. Hopefully it’s a small issue, but a skilled professional will be able to diagnose and remedy whatever problem you may have.
