Americans are buying SUVs and muscle cars again! 2015 is quickly becoming one of the best years the auto industry has seen in almost a decade, and at the top of buyers’ minds are SUVs and muscle cars according to the Associate Press.
Part of the reason is that consumers have more money to spend. The average cost of a new vehicle has risen to an estimated $31,948. People are interested in the features that are offered with SUVs and muscles cars, and they are willing to pay for them. The improving economy and lower interest rates have played a major role in making it affordable for consumers to purchase new vehicles.
Gas prices, also, have been a factor. According to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report,
“Most drivers are paying the lowest July prices since 2009 and are saving 82 cents per gallon at the pump compared to a year ago.”
With gas prices well below the fuel costs of recent years, people are more willing to purchase less gas efficient muscle cars and SUVs. The trend is further perpetuated when consumers find out that manufacturers are continuing to make improvements to their vehicle’s fuel economy. Muscle cars, such as the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger for example, have a fuel economy that top out at 30-31 mpg highway.
SUVs, such as the Jeep Patriot Latitude, are making gains too, both in fuel economy and sales. The Jeep brand has models topping out at 30-31 mpg highway and sales show that Jeep broke a record of selling over 70,000 vehicles in one month during May.
